The original promise of digital money was simple: value should move as easily as information. You should be able to send money to anyone, anywhere, in seconds, at nearly no cost. That was the vision. The reality, even decades later, is that most digital payments still route through slow, fee-heavy intermediaries.
DropPay is built on the premise that we can do better, specifically because we built on the XRP Ledger.
What XRP actually delivers
The numbers are worth stating plainly. Transactions on the XRP Ledger settle in 3 to 5 seconds. The fee per transaction is around $0.0001. The ledger has been running continuously since 2012 and processes thousands of transactions per day without downtime.
XRP was designed by Ripple for exactly this purpose: fast, low-cost value transfer between parties who may not know each other and may be in different countries. It's not a store of value first, or a programmable compute platform. It's a payments layer, and that focused design makes it extremely good at payments.
Why non-custodial matters
When you receive a payment through a traditional platform, the money doesn't go to you immediately. It goes to the platform's custody, then eventually to your bank account after a waiting period. During that time, the platform holds your funds. If the platform freezes your account, you can't access them.
DropPay works differently. When someone pays you through DropPay, the funds go directly to your XRPL wallet address. DropPay is never a custodian. There's no holding period, no withdrawal request, no payout window. The moment the transaction confirms on the XRP Ledger, the money is in a wallet that only you control. To receive payments you just need an XRPL wallet address, and any XRPL-compatible wallet works.
Non-custodial means the funds are in your wallet, not ours. DropPay provides the tooling and interface. The financial control stays with you.
What DropPay built on top
The XRP Ledger handles the settlement. DropPay provides the user experience layer that makes it practical for everyday use.
- Payment requests: Create a link or QR code for any amount. Your customer pays with Xaman in one tap.
- Tip widget: One script tag on your site. Visitors can tip directly without leaving your page.
- Dashboard: Track all your payments, see who paid, manage your tip page, and configure webhooks.
- API and webhooks: Automate your payment flow. Get notified the moment a payment confirms and trigger downstream logic in your app.
- AI agent payments: Enable x402 on your API so AI agents can pay per request using the x402 protocol, directly to your wallet.
None of this requires understanding how the XRP Ledger works at a technical level. DropPay handles that translation. You just need a wallet address.
Where this is heading
Several things are in development or coming soon:
RLUSD payments. Ripple's RLUSD is a regulated dollar-pegged stablecoin on the XRP Ledger. When it's integrated into DropPay, you'll be able to accept stable-value payments without worrying about XRP price fluctuations. This is in active development.
More payer wallets. Payments are currently made using Xaman. Support for additional XRPL wallets is in development, which will make it easier for customers who already have an XRP wallet to pay without switching apps.
More AI agent tooling. The x402 protocol is early but growing. As more AI agents are deployed that need to pay for services, the infrastructure for machine-to-machine payments on the XRP Ledger will become more important. DropPay is building toward that future.
Global reach without gateway onboarding. One of the underappreciated advantages of building on XRP is that there's no geographic restriction. A freelancer in Lagos and a client in Berlin can transact through DropPay the same way a freelancer in London and a client in New York can. No cross-border fees, no currency conversion, no bank account required to receive.
The bigger picture
DropPay isn't just trying to be a cheaper version of existing payment tools. The goal is a payment layer that works equally well for a freelancer invoicing a client, a website accepting tips, a developer's API charging per call, and an AI agent paying for data at 3am with no human in the loop.
All of those use cases share the same infrastructure: the XRP Ledger. Fast enough for any of them. Cheap enough that the economics work even at small amounts. Open enough that anyone can participate without asking permission.
That's the foundation. DropPay is the interface that sits on top of it and makes it usable for everyone, not just people who know what a wallet seed is.
