If you've ever invoiced a client online, you know the feeling. The work is done, the invoice is sent, and then you wait. Two to five business days for a bank transfer. Longer if your client is in another country. And somewhere in that process, 2.9% plus a fixed fee gets taken off the top.
For a $500 freelance project, that's around $15 in fees before a single dollar reaches you. For higher-value work, it's proportionally worse. Payment platforms built for traditional currencies weren't designed with independent workers in mind. They were built for retailers who can afford the cut.
DropPay is built on something different: the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain where payments settle in 3 to 5 seconds and cost less than a fraction of a cent per transaction.
What DropPay actually is
DropPay is a non-custodial payment platform. You create payment links, customers pay, and the money goes directly to your XRPL wallet. DropPay never holds your funds, never takes a percentage, and has no payout window. The money is yours the moment it confirms on the ledger.
The flat cost is $5 a month for the Pro plan, which removes all limits and unlocks the API and webhooks. The free plan covers up to 10 payment requests a month, which is plenty if you're just getting started or only occasionally need to invoice someone.
Compare that to a platform that charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. If you process $2,000 a month in payments, you're paying around $58 in fees. With DropPay, you pay $5. The difference compounds quickly.
How it works, step by step
You sign up, add your XRPL wallet address in your settings, and you're ready to accept payments. Any XRPL-compatible wallet address works. If you don't have one yet, Xaman is a great free option available on iOS and Android. When you need to get paid:
- Go to your dashboard and create a payment request with an amount and a description.
- Copy the pay link or share the QR code with your client.
- Your client opens the link, sees the payment page, and pays with Xaman in one tap.
- The payment confirms on the XRP Ledger within seconds. Your dashboard updates instantly.
There's no approval process, no verification period, and no bank account required on either side. Your client just needs an XRP wallet, which they can set up with Xaman for free in a few minutes.
Who this is built for
DropPay works well for anyone who invoices clients directly:
- Freelancers sending invoices to clients for design, writing, development, or consulting work
- Contractors who work with multiple clients and want a simple payment link they can reuse
- Creators selling digital downloads, memberships, or one-off services
- Online sellers who want a checkout option that doesn't involve a merchant account
If you regularly get paid by the same people, you can create a standing payment link for each client and just send it over email or message. The link stays active, the amount is already set, and the client can pay without needing to create an account.
The tip widget
If you publish content online, whether that's a newsletter, a blog, a video series, or anything else, DropPay includes a tip widget you can embed with a single line of code.
Visitors don't need a DropPay account to tip. They just need an XRP wallet to send from. You paste one script tag into your site's HTML, and a tip button appears. When someone clicks it, a modal opens where they can choose an amount and pay with Xaman. The tip goes directly to your XRPL wallet address.
The embed works on any site where you have access to the HTML, including WordPress, Ghost, Webflow, and plain static sites. You don't need a developer to set it up.
Why XRP specifically
XRP was designed for fast, low-cost value transfer. The XRP Ledger, developed and maintained by Ripple and a broader developer community, settles transactions in 3 to 5 seconds. A transaction costs around $0.0001. Those characteristics make it practical to use for everyday invoicing in a way that other cryptocurrencies aren't.
XRP is widely available on most major exchanges. To make payments, your clients currently use Xaman, a free XRPL wallet app for iOS and Android. Support for additional wallets is in development and will be added in future updates.
